From 14-16 July, Leonardo, on behalf of the EuroDASS Consortium, presented the next enhancement package to Praetorian, the Eurofighter Typhoon’s Defensive Aids Sub-System (DASS) at the Royal International Air Tattoo (RIAT) at RAF Fairford.
Working in conjunction with our test and evaluation partner, 2Excel, EuroDASS presented a trials installation of the key ESM enhancements in the 2Excel Navajo aircraft. This was an irrefutable demonstration of the maturity already achieved under EuroDASS funding to protect the currently proposed P4E timescales. The update includes enhancement to digital signal processing capabilities, greatly improved situational awareness and maximising the compatibility of the DASS with all versions of the Typhoon’s ESCAN radar options. Over the coming weeks, EuroDASS will complete flight trials, further adding to the maturity of these ESM enhancements.
RIAT itself was a great success. The Leonardo stand attracted a great deal of interest, even on the opening day when the great British summer weather of driving wind and rain made it particularly inhospitable. As well as the trial installation on the Navajo, the display also included a portion of a Typhoon wing fitted with an antenna that supports the enhancement package.
